Association and geographical explanations

An association means variables vary together. It can be consistent with a mechanism while also reflecting other variables, selection or shared trends.

Spearman’s rank measures monotonic association; it does not prove that changing one variable causes the other. A geographical explanation needs a mechanism and appropriate evidence.
