Spearman rank correlation

Rank each variable from smallest to largest. Give tied values their average rank. Spearman’s coefficient is the Pearson correlation of these ranks; the no-ties shortcut is inappropriate here. This task calculates association, not significance.

Resource description

Paired fictional site observations

1. What rank do the two distance values of 2 km receive?

2. Calculate Spearman’s coefficient to two decimal places.

3. What does this calculation establish?

Choose an answer

Synthetic data and original mapping. Practice does not count as required fieldwork.

Use the resource carefully

State the unit and the part of the resource you used. A pattern in a fictional dataset is evidence for that exercise; it does not establish a fact about a real place.

Check whether an explanation is supported by the data or needs additional geographical knowledge. For statistical tasks, a calculated result does not establish causation or significance by itself.
