Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, 2011

Pacific coast of north-eastern Honshu, Japan · Event or project period: 2011

An offshore earthquake generated a tsunami that affected a long coastal stretch. Coastal inundation and earthquake shaking are different hazards with different footprints.

The USGS event record now reports magnitude 9.1. Early reports used 9.0; a revision should be recorded rather than treated as a separate event.
