Mann–Whitney U

Rank two independent samples, including tied observations.

Skills resources are shared. Check your qualification page for its specific assessment conditions.

Mann–Whitney U

Row alignment is only for compact display: these are independent observations, not paired measurements. Pool and rank all eight values, averaging tied ranks. Define UA = RA − nA(nA + 1)/2, UB = nA nB − UA. Report the smaller U. Comparing medians additionally requires compatible distribution shapes.

Resource description

Fictional vegetation height observations (cm)

1. What average rank do the three values equal to 11 receive?

2. What is the rank sum RA for group A?

3. What is the smaller Mann–Whitney U statistic?

Synthetic data and original mapping. Practice does not count as required fieldwork.

Use the resource carefully

State the unit and the part of the resource you used. A pattern in a fictional dataset is evidence for that exercise; it does not establish a fact about a real place.

Check whether an explanation is supported by the data or needs additional geographical knowledge. For statistical tasks, a calculated result does not establish causation or significance by itself.
