Interquartile range

Calculate quartiles using an explicitly stated convention.

Skills resources are shared. Check your qualification page for its specific assessment conditions.

Interquartile range

Use medians of the lower and upper halves: Q1 is the median of the first four sorted values and Q3 the median of the last four. This convention is stated because quartile methods differ.

Resource description

Fictional pebble measurements

1. What is Q1 in mm?

2. What is Q3 in mm?

3. What is the interquartile range in mm?

Synthetic data and original mapping. Practice does not count as required fieldwork.

Use the resource carefully

State the unit and the part of the resource you used. A pattern in a fictional dataset is evidence for that exercise; it does not establish a fact about a real place.

Check whether an explanation is supported by the data or needs additional geographical knowledge. For statistical tasks, a calculated result does not establish causation or significance by itself.
