Gini coefficient

Measure inequality using equal-sized fictional household observations.

Gini coefficient

Use G = Σi Σj |xi − xj| ÷ (2n Σi xi), including both ordered pairs and zero self-differences. All incomes are non-negative. This is the uncorrected finite-population coefficient on a 0–1 scale; alternative small-sample corrections produce different values.

Resource description

Five equally weighted fictional households

1. What is the mean income in units?

2. Calculate the Gini coefficient to two decimal places.

3. If every household income doubles, what happens to this coefficient?

Synthetic data and original mapping. Practice does not count as required fieldwork.

Use the resource carefully

State the unit and the part of the resource you used. A pattern in a fictional dataset is evidence for that exercise; it does not establish a fact about a real place.

Check whether an explanation is supported by the data or needs additional geographical knowledge. For statistical tasks, a calculated result does not establish causation or significance by itself.
