How a city gains global influence

A city can influence places far beyond its boundaries. Population is only part of the story.

People cross an imagined urban square beside a tram and planted spaces.
  1. Connections

Ports, airports and digital networks connect firms and people with other countries.

  2. Specialist services

Finance, law, research and other specialist services can attract international businesses.

  3. Investment and jobs

Investment can create jobs and attract workers. Skilled workers and established firms can then attract more investment.

  4. Migration

Workers may move for employment, education or family links. Migration can contribute to growth alongside natural increase.

  5. Unequal outcomes

New jobs and transport do not benefit everyone equally. Housing costs, skills and access can limit who gains.
